Biography
I am a colorectal and general surgeon, Head of the Department of Surgery and Critical Care at the University of Otago, Christchurch, and a clinician with Health New Zealand. My research focuses on the development, validation and implementation of artificial intelligence to improve surgical and cancer care. Current programmes include digital pathology, computer vision for surgery, multimodal prediction models integrating pathology, imaging and clinical data, and AI-supported clinical decision-making. I am particularly interested in translating AI from research into routine clinical practice through multidisciplinary collaborations involving clinicians, engineers, computer scientists, health providers and industry. My goal is to develop clinically useful, trustworthy AI that improves patient outcomes, supports healthcare professionals and advances precision medicine.
Research Projects and Ideas
Current projects include AI-enhanced digital pathology for colorectal and pancreatic cancer, multimodal prediction of response to rectal cancer therapy, computer vision for laparoscopic surgery, and implementation of AI-enabled surgical video platforms. Research spans model development, clinical validation and translation into routine healthcare.
Collaborations and Skills
Interested in collaborating on clinically focused AI projects in surgery, oncology and pathology. Our group offers access to well-annotated clinical datasets, digital pathology, prospective clinical studies, surgical video research, clinical validation, trial design and multidisciplinary collaborations with engineering, computer science and industry partners.
Connections of interest
Happy to connect with clinicians, researchers, engineers, data scientists, industry and health organisations interested in translational AI, digital pathology, surgical AI, computer vision, multimodal prediction models, implementation science, and collaborative grant opportunities.
