Biography

Professor Gillian Dobbie is a leading New Zealand computer scientist whose research includes applying data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve health outcomes. Based in the School of Computer Science at the University of Auckland, she has played a key role in developing data-driven approaches to healthcare through initiatives such as the Precision Driven Health partnership, which brought together researchers, clinicians, government and industry to advance personalised healthcare in Aotearoa New Zealand. Her health research focuses on the ethical and effective use of routinely collected health data, including projects on dementia prediction, healthcare resource planning and the responsible use of AI in clinical settings. Professor Dobbie is also a co-chair of the AI in Health Research Network, supporting collaboration to ensure AI technologies are safe, equitable and beneficial for all New Zealanders.

Research Projects and Ideas

Current research includes foundation models for health data, privacy-preserving analytics, multimodal data integration, AI decision-support systems for precision and population health, and evaluating and mitigating bias in AI systems. Recent projects include developing machine learning models for the early identification and prediction of dementia and healthy ageing outcomes, using longitudinal health records and real-world sequential data to support timely intervention and equitable care.

Collaborations and Skills

My current research focuses on the application of artificial intelligence and data science to improve health outcomes through the responsible use of data. Research goals include developing predictive models, advancing personalised and precision healthcare, while ensuring AI systems are trustworthy, transparent and equitable. I am keen to build collaborations with researchers who have interesting problems that need these skills.
