Biography

Endalkachew Girma is a PhD Candidate in Health Biotechnology and Africa AI Policy Fellow with 10+ years of experience in zoonotic disease research, genomic surveillance, and bioinformatics. His work focuses on applying AI and machine learning to infectious disease prediction and biosecurity observability, with recent contributions including MARVpred—an ML model for Marburg virus inhibitor prediction. He seeks to advance AI-driven biosurveillance and outbreak early warning systems in Africa.

Research Projects and Ideas

Developing AI models for predictive biosurveillance of emerging zoonotic pathogens in Ethiopia. Leveraging genomic, epidemiological, and environmental data to build early warning systems for rabies, anthrax, and viral hemorrhagic fevers. Currently applying machine learning to improve outbreak prediction, pathogen characterization, and vaccine efficacy assessment using whole-genome sequencing datasets. Goal: create open-access AI tools for real-time biosecurity observability in resource-limited s

Collaborations and Skills

Offering expertise in zoonotic disease epidemiology, molecular biology, whole-genome sequencing, bioinformatics, and ML model development (MARVpred). Access to Ethiopian Public Health Institute and Armauer Hansen Research Institute datasets, laboratory facilities, and field surveillance networks. Seeking collaboration with AI researchers to co-develop predictive biosurveillance models, access to high-performance computing, and mentorship in advanced generative AI for genomic data analysis.

Connections of interest

Seeking connections with AI/ML researchers in biosurveillance, genomic epidemiology, and One Health. Interested in collaborations on predictive outbreak models, AI for pathogen surveillance, and biosecurity observability in Africa. Open to policy dialogues on AI governance and mentorship in frontier AI for scientific discovery.
